Dontarian Hollis (stage name BYOU) is an Atlanta-based rapper known for his high-energy verses and quick wordplay. You've seen him in Lil Yachty's "All In" music video (feat. The Sailing Team) with his signature green hair, crisp $2 bills in hand — sporting gold grills/ cross earrings, a vintage red, white, and blue drawstring collar shirt with Playboy bunny shorts, and a pair of Adidas Yeezy 950 duck boots. You have no choice but to notice BYOU's unique sense of style.
Jonathan Mckinnon: Define BYOU.
BYOU: BYOU means be yourself.
What's the significance of dying your hair green?
I dyed my hair green because my grandma called me a "goo boy" one day. I didn't know what it meant, but it sounded green.
Take us through your thought process of putting an outfit together for the day.
I like to have everything perfect. Colors are my first thought, second would have to be the shirt, and last is the pants. I automatically know what shoes to wear with my outfit.
Do you have any thrift or consignment menswear in your wardrobe?
I get some clothing from my grandma's store because she loves thrifting. I've been thrifting with her since I was 7 years old, but other than that my girlfriend makes custom clothing for me or we'll shop on Grailed.
What three accessories can't you leave the house without?
I can't leave without my grill, cross earrings, and "Alexandra" necklace which all have a meaning of love.
Lately I've seen you sporting Yeezy Season 3 military boots. What other types of footwear do you gravitate toward?
I just love hi-top sneakers and boots.
Is your song, Ksubis, based off the Australian signature denim fashion brand - Ksubi?
That song is about my friends stealing things. The first thing they bought with their stolen stuff was Ksubi jeans, and shouts out to Australia. I had my first fan come from there!
Your Bart Simpson rendition shirt was released in October 2016 after your first mixtape "Yacht Club." Do you have any plans of releasing more shirts or a clothing line in the near future?
I like what I've seen in men's vintage shirts and pants, but they're usually too small or sold out. I'm looking forward to creating a vintage look, so I won't be down and out when I can't find what I like.
Where do you think Atlanta fashion culture is right now?
Atlanta fashion culture is like California and New York where you have to wear seven different shoes a week. That said, it's all about being different right now, so you'll see anything that's fresh and unique.
Is there anyone else in The Sailing Team that embodies fashion in the way you do?
Lil Yachty definitely loves fashion more than anyone else. I love everyone's fashion taste, but we all dress differently with our own styles.
