UNMATCHED is the newest site to emerge with an active marketplace offering high-end menswear from Acne Studios to the latest designer collaborations. Based in London, a prime location for successful fashion tech startups such as ASOS and Farfetched, UNMATCHED, launched in January 2017. Founder Naqeeb Hussain created UNMATCHED to serve the needs of the underserved, but yet rapidly growing menswear consignment market. We met up with Naqeeb to discuss what his new site entails and the products it provides to men globally.
Jonathan Mckinnon: What was your profession prior to launching your own business?
Naqeeb Hussain: I graduated a few years ago from the London College of Fashion where I was studying menswear design. During my time I interned for J.W. Anderson and Alexander McQueen. Upon graduation I began working in the buying office for Harrods, specifically for their sportswear department and I was working with brands such as Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, etc. So I’ve had a very varied breadth of experience in the menswear industry, from design, buying to wholesale.
I have always had a keen interest in menswear, and I knew that I have always wanted to create an ecommerce platform related to this niche. Which is why I have created unmatchedstudios.com, which launched earlier last month.
Why did you decide to get into the online streetwear/ luxury consignment business?
I had come across a number of resale sites/apps which focused solely or primarily on womenswear, and I felt that the menswear apparel sector was very much underserved. Also, I didn’t enjoy buying/selling on Facebook groups, which is why I created this site. We will be looking to launch an app at some point in the future.
Discuss the meaning behind UNMATCHED.
The philosophy behind UNMATCHED is underpinned by the meaning of our brand. UNMATCHED says to our customer that what we offer is the best or something unique, whether it’s the products on offer, or the unrivaled customer support that we deliver. The meaning encompasses the user experience that we aim to achieve, in order to become the buy and sell destination for menswear.
What customer features does UNMATCHED have that sets it apart from the competition?
We have many, for example:
• When uploading a listing, designers are automatically categorized to specific departments, therefore when buyers are searching through listings it’ll be easier for the buyer to locate all the products in that department. These departments include, Luxury Designer, Contemporary, Collaborations X, and Casuals
• As a seller you can generate sales reports which will you give you top-line information on your previous sales and current listings, so you can review your selling strategy accordingly
• Buyers can purchase multiple items in 1 transaction
• Sellers can upload a listing including color, condition and you can add a promotional price for your listing during a select period of time
• We only charge a 1% admin fee, and all payments are processed via PayPal
Your inventory is majority high-end streetwear and luxury brands, but are there other types of brands that deviate from the norm?
As you’ve noticed there is a high focus on luxury and high-end streetwear brands, and that does derive from our users. We allow our users to upload any menswear items they would like to sell, whether it’s a Raf Simons parka or a Supreme tee. We’ve even had requests from ex college students to sell their graduate collections, which was completely unexpected. So this might be a vertical that we might explore in the future.
What is the curation process like for you?
The curation process derives primarily from our users. Sellers can upload any menswear items that they would like to sell, so I guess you could say that the “curation process” is directed by our users, which is fantastic, because you never know what coveted menswear items you’re going to come across.
How do you deal with fake lisitings?
We have a team constantly trawling through listings for any fraudulent listings. We have a zero tolerance policy towards fake listings, and the users accounts will be in jeopardy.
What are the top 5 brands bought and sold on UNMATCHED?
Can you tell us a story about one of your best sales on UNMATCHED?
It was of a prototype Stone Island garment, which fetched for $1100! Which indicates that there is a demand for coveted menswear items, regardless of price.
